Falkland, 2009 Britain in Bloom Champion of Champions
Falkland is the 2009 Champion of Champions in the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Britain in Bloom Awards – one of the largest horticultural campaigns in Europe.
The village was presented with a Gold Medal for ‘outstanding’ achievement and also won the prestigious THS Britain in Bloom Young People’s Award.
Julia Christiansen Business Liaison for Falkland in Bloom said: “This is such a special time for Falkland. The awards are fantastic news for the whole community.
“We are especially proud of winning the Young People’s Award which is in no part due to the efforts of our local schools and Air Cadets.”
There was a poignant note to Falkland’s success with Julia paying tribute to the late Bob Maxwell, a leading local horticultural expert who had been heavily involved in previous Falkland in Bloom campaigns: “We’d like to remember Bob through this success,” she said.
RHS judges Susan Smith and Jim Buttress said were impressed with the community’s work in producing, planting and subsequently maintaining all the displays seen throughout the tour.
They also noted the local care for the natural environment and the recent red squirrel survey, along with the involvement of young people, including school children, the Fife Air Cadets and Scouts, in caring for their environment.
North East Fife Area Committee Chair Councillor Andrew Arbuckle said: ”This is an outstanding effort. Falkland is steeped in history and was a hidden gem of a village, now it is well and truly on the UK map.
“The awards are a tribute to the unsung efforts of everyone involved. From the parks staff watering the flowers, to the unpaid community volunteers, to the green fingered local schoolchildren.
“It is yet more proof, that Fife is a great place to live work and visit. The Beautiful Scotland awards recently recognised this, now it has been confirmed on the UK stage.”
The awards were presented at a ceremony held on September 23, 2009 in the Riviera International Conference Centre in Torbay, hosted by BBC Gardeners’ World presenter Toby Buckland.
