Elie chain walk
Elie Chain Walk
One of the unique features of the Fife Coast is the Elie Chain Walk.
Chains are built into a section of the cliff west of Elie village, hugging the cliffs towards Kincraig Point and Shell Bay.
This is a challenging part of the Fife Coastline, and has been enjoyed for many years. If you are considering attempting it, please plan carefully, and be aware of the advice given below and repeated on signs at both ends of the Chain Walk.
ENSURE THE SAFETY OF YOURSELF AND THOSE WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES.
The Chain Walk is located some 1000 metres to the west of Earlsferry on the south Fife coast at national grid co-ordinates 346600, 699700 (NT 466, 997). Access from the east is from the village of Elie. Access from the west is via Shell Bay Caravan Park, but ask at the Caravan Park about vehicle parking. The Fife Coastal Path does not include the Chain Walk, but is situated on the cliffs above it, with a gradual descent towards the east.
See publications section on this page for location map.
PLEASE TAKE CARE - the terrain on this section of coast is precipitous and dangerous.
2. WARNING SIGNS
These are located at both ends:
Allow 1 – 3 Hours.
The present anchors were installed in April 2000 replacing the previous system of anchors & chains and most of the current chains were replaced in 2010. The original installation was put in place by a local person about 1920.
All chains and stanchions are marine grade stainless steel.
Method of Installation
The chains are fixed to the rock by threaded rod anchors inserted into pre-drilled holes and grouted. The anchors are embedded 600mm (2 feet) into the rock.
The stanchions are 1600mm long and are also embedded 600mm into the rock.
5. INSPECTION AND TESTING REGIME
The Chain Walk is inspected by a firm of Engineers twice a year. Their inspections include pull tests of 5kN. Some movement of the bolts as they emerge from the rock is regarded as normal, and is not an indication that the bolt is about to fail.
6. FEEDBACK - USER INSPECTION/INCIDENT REPORTING FORMS
Please use the feedback form within the publications section on this page to comment on your experience of the Chain Walk, or to report incidents or faults.
These should be returned to firstname.lastname@example.org
