Fife Council has a duty to protect the funds it administers and for this purpose we may use the information you have provided to assist in the detection and correction of any errors, the prevention and detection of any fraud along with the recovery of any debts due to the Council. This complies with the Data Protection Act 2018.
Schedule 2, Para 2 - Exemption for the purposes of the prevention or detection of crime, the apprehension or prosecution of offenders or the assessment or collection of tax or duty.
Schedule 2, Para 3 - Exemption for personal data which consists of a classification applied to a data subject as part of a risk assessment system operated by government, local authority or another authority administering housing benefit for crime and taxation purposes.
We may carry out a data matching exercise with the information you have provided, e.g. matching employee payroll data to Council Tax arrears. Where such an exercise discloses a match no assumption will be made as to whether there is fraud, error or other explanation until an investigation is carried out. If a data match identifies any debts due to the Council, these will be enforced following appropriate recovery proceedings.
