Permits to Work (Formal Permission Regimes)

Permits to Work

Permits to Work

 PAGE UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Formal (written) safe systems of work are often required for construction-related activities, maintenance work and certain cleaning operations to help ensure that control measures to manage associated risks are properly understood and applied by all concerned.

Formal safe systems of work are often a mandatory requirement; e.g. Confined Space Work, excavations, certain Hot Works.

The level of control depends on the likelihood and severity (consequence) of risk arising, best managed by a proportionate (3-tier) approach involving:

•             Written operating procedures              - for low risk activities

•             safety method statements                    - for medium risk activities

•             permit-to-work systems                        - for high risk activities

Additional information about the Council’s ‘3-tier’ approach is given in the PowerPoint presentation below.

Corporate Guide OHS-C-29.G1 (below)  will be supplemented by additional pro-forma at the conclusion of a current pilot and proof-of-concept programs.
