Register a stillbirth
If your baby is stillborn, the law still requires that the birth is registered within 21 days.
If the parents of the baby are married to each other, either parent can register the birth alone if they wish.
If the parents of the baby are not married to each other, and the father's details are to be recorded on the birth certificate, both parents have to sign the birth register. If one of the parents can't come to do this, ask a registrar for advice by using the contact details below.
You will need to provide the following documents when you come to register the still-birth:
- Form issued by the hospital
- Birth certificates of both parents, where you both wish to be named on the baby's birth certificate
- Marriage certificate if the baby's parents are married
If some of these documents aren't available please speak to the registrar, who will be able to advise you.
It costs nothing to register a still-birth and a certificate is issued free of charge.
Please use the contact details below if you have any questions or require further advice.
