From Friday 6thJuly the burial office in County Buildings, Cupar will close.

Regrettably due to the specialist knowledge required to manage the workload that comes through the Cupar office and the limited number of staff in the Council who have that knowledge, we are having to close the office and relocate the records to Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline Crematorium.

The key cemeteries that each crematorium will now additionally hold the records for, and carry out administration of, are below.

Kirkcaldy Crematorium  (Tel: 01592 583524, Fax: 01592203438  Email: Kirkcaldy.Crematorium@fife.gov.uk

This change will not impact on services for the general public - as previously the Local Office in Cupar, at the County Buildings, continues to offer services to the public to provide registration services (Births, Deaths, Marriages & Civil Partnerships). Burial Office enquiries can still be logged via the Local Office, who will send the enquiry to the relevant office for reply.

The day-to-day administration and maintenance of the records for burials and cremations taking place in Fife is the responsibility of Fife Council's Bereavement Services.

It is our aim to provide a personal and respectful burial and cremation service.

The charges for burial services are as follows:

  • Purchase of a New Lair - £644.00
  • Purchase of a Casket Lair (for cremated remains) - £271.00
  • Interment of an Adult (16 years & over) - £620.00
  • Interment of a Child (Stillborn & up to & including 15 years) - No Charge
  • Interment of Cremated Remains - £207.00
  • Dispersal of Ashes (beneath turf) - £70.00

The term "buying a grave space" is often used and can be misunderstood as you do not actually own the land itself.  The ownership of the cemetery land remains with the Council.  What is actually being purchased is the Grant of Exclusive Right of Burial in a grave space for a term of 99 years.

As a registered owner of the Grant of Exclusive Right of Burial, you have the automatic right to be buried in the grave.  You may also allow others to be buried in the grave (space permitting).

The Council runs two crematoriums, one in Dunfermline and one in Kirkcaldy.

The costs of our services are:

  • Cremation Fee (Adult 16 years & over): £685.00
  • Extended / Additional Service Times:  £343.00
  • Cremation Fee (Still Born & up to & including 15 years): No Charge
  • Direct Cremation (NO SERVICE):  £548.00
  • Disposal of Ashes from other Crematoria: £70.00

Our opening hours are:

Mon - Fri: 9.00am - 5.00pm  (office closed lunchtime 1.00pm - 1.30pm, access to Books of Remembrance still available)
Sat.: 9.00am - 12.00 noon
Sun. 11.00am - 1.00pm

The gardens are open at all times.

The decision on whether to have a burial or cremation will depend on a number of factors such as the person's own wishes, the views of the executor, the wishes of the next of kin and the costs involved.

Please see the publications section on this page for more information on burials and cremations, including FAQs, funeral pre-arrangements, using a funeral director, coffins and alternatives, burials in private land, cemetary memorials, and the recycling of metals following cremations.
