Register a birth

If your baby was born in Scotland, you must register the birth at any registrar's office in Scotland within 21 days of the birth.

Please use the contact details below to make an appointment to register the birth at one of our local offices.

If the parents of the baby are married to each other, either can register the birth.

If the parents of the baby are not married to each other, and the father's details are to be recorded on the birth certificate, both parents have to sign the birth register. If the father is unable to attend to register the birth please ask a registrar for advice.

You will need to provide the following documents when you come to register the birth:

  • Form issued by the hospital or Midwife
  • Birth certificate(s) of parent(s)
  • Marriage certificate if the baby's parents are married

If some of these documents aren't available - speak to the registrar, who will be able to advise you.

It costs nothing to register the birth of your baby.  You will be issued with:

  • Free abbreviated birth certificate
  • Letter to register your baby with your doctor

If you want a full birth certificate with details of parents, this costs £10 at the time of registration.
